Benefits and What to Expect
Do you ever have those days when your body feels a little puffy, heavy or simply not quite like your own? Perhaps you have been sitting for long periods, travelling, preparing for a special occasion or just feeling as though you need a proper reset.
This is one of the reasons I love offering Brazilian lymphatic drainage. It is a wonderfully energising yet relaxing treatment that combines rhythmic massage with more focused body-sculpting movements. My aim is to help you feel lighter, refreshed and more comfortable in your own skin.
From my treatment room in Belsize Village, London, I work with you on a one-to-one basis and tailor every massage to your body, your comfort and what you would like from the session. There is no one-size-fits-all routine here. Your treatment is always personal to you.
What is Brazilian lymphatic drainage?
Brazilian lymphatic drainage is a specialised style of massage that originated in Brazil. It takes inspiration from traditional lymphatic massage but has a greater focus on body contouring and definition.
Your lymphatic system forms an important part of your immune and circulatory systems. It carries lymph, a clear fluid containing infection-fighting white blood cells, and helps return excess fluid from your tissues to your bloodstream.
Unlike your circulatory system, it does not have a central pump like the heart. Normal movement, breathing and muscle activity all help lymph to flow. During your massage, I use carefully directed, rhythmic movements intended to complement these natural processes.
It is important to explain that Brazilian lymphatic drainage is different from the manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) used in clinical care. Clinical MLD is a very gentle, specialised treatment that may form part of lymphoedema management. Brazilian lymphatic drainage is usually more energetic and includes additional sculpting strokes for cosmetic and general wellbeing purposes.
If you are unsure which treatment is the right one for you, please ask me. I will always be honest about what I can offer and whether you may need advice from a medical professional first.
Why do my clients choose this treatment?
Everyone comes to me for a slightly different reason. Some clients have a special occasion approaching, while others simply want to feel less puffy and enjoy some valuable time for themselves. Here are some of the potential benefits that often attract people to Brazilian lymphatic drainage.
You may feel lighter and less puffy
The rhythmic movements are designed to encourage the movement of excess tissue fluid. If you experience mild, everyday puffiness or fluid retention, you may leave your appointment feeling lighter and more comfortable.
It may give your body a more defined appearance
I use purposeful contouring movements around areas such as the waist, abdomen, hips and legs. These can temporarily enhance the appearance of your natural contours and leave you feeling smoother and more confident in your silhouette.
I will never tell you that this treatment removes fat or causes weight loss, because it does not. Any immediate visible change is generally connected with reduced puffiness and the temporary effects of massage on the tissues. I think it is important that you know exactly what a treatment can – and cannot – realistically achieve.
It can ease that heavy or sluggish feeling
Long journeys, hours spent at a desk, hormonal changes and the general demands of life can sometimes leave you feeling heavy or sluggish. This massage can provide a lovely sense of movement and ease, helping you feel a little more at home in your body again.
It gives you time to properly switch off
Although Brazilian lymphatic drainage is active and purposeful in places, many of my clients find it deeply relaxing. Your appointment gives you permission to pause, breathe and let somebody else look after you for a while.
It can help you feel your best for a special occasion
You may be preparing for a wedding, holiday, party, photoshoot or another important event. A Brazilian lymphatic drainage massage can be a lovely part of your preparation, helping you feel refreshed and confident. If you have a particular date in mind, let me know and I can advise you on when to book.
What happens during your appointment?
If this is your first visit, please do not worry. I will talk you through everything before we begin.
We will start with a private consultation so I can understand why you have booked, which areas you would like me to focus on and whether you have any health conditions or take any medication that I should know about. This is also your opportunity to ask questions and tell me about any concerns.
During the treatment, I use a flowing sequence of rhythmic and sculpting massage techniques. Depending on your needs and the length of your appointment, I may work on areas including your abdomen, waist, hips, thighs, legs and arms.
Brazilian lymphatic drainage should feel purposeful, but it should never feel painfully intense. I will adapt the pressure and pace to suit you, and you can ask me to make an adjustment at any time. Your comfort and privacy always come first, with professional draping used throughout your treatment.
I offer both 60-minute and 90-minute Brazilian lymphatic drainage appointments at my Belsize Village clinic. A 90-minute session gives us more time for a comprehensive treatment and to focus on several areas of your body.
How might you feel afterwards?
Many clients tell me that they feel relaxed, refreshed and noticeably lighter after their massage. You may also see a temporary improvement in puffiness or body definition.
Every body responds differently, however, and I would never promise dramatic or permanent results from a single session. The effect you notice, and how long it lasts, will depend on your own body, lifestyle and the reason you were retaining fluid in the first place.
After your appointment, I generally recommend drinking normally according to your thirst and enjoying some gentle movement, such as a short walk, if you feel comfortable. You do not need to force yourself to drink excessive amounts of water. I will give you any individual aftercare advice you need before you leave.
Will you need more than one treatment?
That depends entirely on you and what you hope to gain from the treatment.
You may simply want one appointment before a special occasion or as a restorative treat. Alternatively, you might decide to include Brazilian lymphatic drainage in your regular self-care routine.
There is never any pressure to book a course. We can talk about how you feel after your first session and decide together what—if anything—would suit you next.
Is Brazilian lymphatic drainage right for you?
Your wellbeing will always come before providing a treatment. Brazilian lymphatic drainage is not suitable in every situation, and I will not massage you if doing so could put your health at risk.
Please postpone your appointment if you are acutely unwell, have a fever, an active infection or unexplained new swelling.
I will also ask you to speak to your GP or relevant healthcare professional before booking if you:
- have been diagnosed with lymphoedema;
- have a history of blood clots or deep vein thrombosis;
- have heart, kidney or significant circulatory problems;
- are undergoing cancer treatment or have recently had surgery;
- are pregnant or have recently given birth; or
- have another health condition that may affect whether massage is suitable.
If swelling appears suddenly, affects only one limb or is accompanied by pain, redness, warmth, chest pain or breathlessness, please seek prompt medical advice rather than booking a massage.
Please never feel embarrassed about sharing medical information with me. Our consultation is confidential, and knowing the full picture helps me look after you properly and recommend the safest option.
